Into the Deep

Bishop Richard Malone (now of the Diocese of Portland, Maine) hosted the series Into the Deep for the CatholicTV Network in 2001. It aims, in a user-friendly way, to bring to viewers the important writing of Pope John Paul II’s apostolic letter Novo Millennio Inuente. The letter was the Pope’s first of the new millennium and is to all Catholics. According to Bishop Malone, “the letter helps us move forward into the new millennium as we enter a new era for the church and the world.” The series title comes from words John Paul uses in the letter quoting a passage from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 5, where Jesus tells his Apostles to cast their nets “out into the deep” not to catch fish, but people. Into the Deep has 13 parts and will cover topics discussed by John Paul II including growing with Christ; listening to the Word; proclaiming the Word; our relationship with the Lord; sharing the vision of hope and confidence; and commitment to practical love of every human.CatholicTV
